Christening / baptism / blessing

Christening / baptism / blessing

of your newborn child, your child or of yourself, at any age:

mark this great step in life:

  • express thanks,
  • celebrate
  • and affirm faith (not necessarily at a blessing)

Christening / baptism

is one of the two sacraments we celebrate as part of the Church of Scotland (the other is Communion).

When it's a child baptism/christening, at least one parent or other close family member will be a member of the Church or willing to become a member. In the baptismal service those appropriate adults profess their Christian faith and promise to give the child an upbringing in faith.

When you want baptism as an adult, you yourself profess your Christian faith.

Baptism means becoming part of the one, worldwide Church, and so is celebrated when your church is gathered - that is the gathering or congregation that nourishes and grows your faith, where you live and thrive and where you regularly connect in Christian faith community.

(Genuine emergencies, hospital situations, ... are exceptions: speak with us.)

For all christening/baptism contact a minister, see below.

Blessing of a child

Celebrate the thanksgiving for, and blessing of, your child.

As with a baptism, the blessing ceremony takes place when your church is gathered, except:

the wording and promises are different, and no water is used.

No commitment or belief are required from the parents.

For blessings, contact one of the ministers (see below).
